Liberty Home Guard: Best For Customization
Liberty Home Guard impressed me with its customizable coverage options and glowing online reviews. Most home warranty providers have overwhelmingly negative reviews from customers, but Liberty Home Guard scored 90% positive reviews on most third-party sites, higher than any of the competition I researched.
Another thing I like is that Liberty offers 42 add-on options (including uncommon options like trash compactors, casita guest units, and reverse osmosis water filtration systems), more than any other home warranty provider in the industry. Liberty also covers up to two portable window air conditioning units per home, which most competitors neglect.
I found that LHG is one of the few home warranty companies that provides a 24/7 online chat tool. I used the tool while secret shopping and connected with an LHG representative in less than two minutes. This is a major perk for potential buyers, giving them near-instant access to help from a customer service agent.
Some other features I like are that LHG provides a 60-day workmanship guarantee for all completed repairs. Most home warranties only offer a 30-day guarantee. Liberty also provides coverage in all 50 states — something very few providers can match. If you own rental properties or need to move across the country, you can keep your home warranty protection from LHG regardless of your location.
First, and most importantly, Liberty Home Guard has received an increase in negative reviews recently, and its A+ rating was revoked by the BBB in January 2024. It still has a 4.5/5 star rating overall, which is impressive in its own right, but its rating removal gives me pause.
Additionally, Liberty Home Guard isn’t overpriced, but its rates start higher than most of the competition. Its most affordable plan costs $49.99 a month, which may be an obstacle to those looking for cheaper coverage. Likewise, while Liberty has decent coverage caps for most covered items, it limits electrical and plumbing systems to $250 per claim within the first 90 days of sign-up. After 90 days, LHG increases the electrical and plumbing limit to $500, which is still significantly lower than its standard $2,000 coverage limit.
Another downside worth mentioning is Liberty Home Guard’s service call fee structure. When you pull a quote, the company doesn’t display its service call fee options. Instead, it assigns the fee after you purchase a home warranty plan. We called an LHG representative and confirmed that the service call fee ranges from $65 to $125 per claim.
Lastly, Liberty is a fairly new company that’s only been around since 2017, so it lacks the decades of experience that other providers have. First American Home Warranty has been around for more than 35 years, and American Home Shield has been in business for more than 50 years, putting Liberty’s newness in perspective.

Liberty Home Guard impressed me with its 42 optional add-ons, many of which (grinder pump, freestanding ice maker, etc.) are options that other providers don’t offer. Also, in general, there’s less red tape around Liberty’s contract than I’ve seen with competitors during my research. There aren’t any nonstandard exclusions or limitations, so that’s a very good sign. Liberty is especially beneficial for homeowners who use window air conditioning units because it covers up to two portable window air conditioning units per home. Many other providers don’t cover AC window units at all.
Despite being a newer company, Liberty Home Guard has great customer reviews on sites like the Better Business Bureau. Most home warranty providers have a bad reputation, so the fact that Liberty Home Guard has 4.5/5 stars speaks volumes. Liberty’s BBB rating is currently NR, but it was previously an A+, so there’s hope that the BBB will reinstate it. Given my experience with Liberty Home Guard, I would feel comfortable purchasing the Total Home Guard plan since it’s a good bargain for comprehensive coverage. However, the Appliance Guard plan is a bit overpriced, and the Systems Guard plan is basically the same price as the comprehensive coverage. If you’re interested in Liberty Home Guard, I recommend spending the extra $5 to $10 and getting the Total Home Guard plan.

I recommend the Total Home Guard plan since it’s a great deal for comprehensive coverage. However, I would shy away from the Appliance Guard plan because it’s not a great value for the money. I find roof leak coverage especially beneficial because leaks are some of the most common damages to homes, but this may vary depending on where you live. If you live in a particularly dry, warm climate, the lawn sprinkler system add-on may make more sense to keep your lawn healthy and green despite the scorching temperatures. However, if you live in an area where it rains a lot, the roof leak coverage, although limited, can be a benefit to your home. On the other end of the spectrum, the TV mounting coverage is unnecessary because a new TV mount is inexpensive, and the monthly price is a lot for an add-on.

Liberty Home Guard Affordability

Liberty Home Guard’s most affordable plan starts higher than most competitors at $50 a month, but Liberty’s rates top out at $59.99 for the Total Home Guard plan, which is a great deal for full home coverage. It’s not as expensive as some premium monthly options from AFC Home Warranty ($89) and First American Home Warranty ($72). While the systems-only plan and the appliance-only plan are a bit overpriced, the comprehensive plan is a great value.
The customer representative I spoke to stated that there was a service fee discount for policies purchased over the phone, bringing my service fee price down by a whopping $40. This may not be the case for every policy or every location, so keep in mind that your individual service fees and monthly rates will vary. However, I recommend calling first and asking if there’s a discount for purchasing your policy over the phone.

Liberty Home Guard ranks fairly well amongst the competition when it comes to its customer experience. In general, its agents are very informative and helpful, but they aren’t always fully transparent when pitching the contract to customers. This is common in the industry since most of the companies don’t highlight glaring red flags in the sample contract.
However, Liberty’s agents are still very knowledgeable and responsive to questions. Most complaints on review sites were regarding items not being covered under warranty and the long waiting period (30-60 days) in the sample contract, so we gave Liberty a 7.8 out of 10.
Liberty Home Guard Company Reputation

Liberty Home Guard has particularly high scores on most customer review sites, making them an extremely reliable choice. I can’t stress enough how rare it is to find a company with more than 90% positive reviews on any site, let alone three different review sites. In an industry plagued by negative reviews, Liberty Home Guard is truly an outlier. However, I do want to highlight that Liberty Home Guard’s current BBB status has shifted from an A+ to NR or “Not-Rated. We reached out to a representative from the Better Business Bureau, and they said, “This business is not currently rated. BBB has recently received numerous complaints against this business and will issue a rating after it has fully evaluated them.” When asked about whether they revoke ratings after an increase in complaints, the rep said, “Yes, if they feel they need to review the complaints first before issuing an accurate rating.” Keep in mind that the BBB has changed LHG’s rating from graded to NR a few times in the past two years. The last grade before the current NR was an A+.
Most customers praised Liberty Home Guard for its diligent customer representatives and prompt service. On the other hand, the complaints were typically about Liberty not covering certain items or being slow to address repairs. Yelp told a very different story than some of the other review sites, though it’s not surprising because many customers only choose to write a review if they’ve had a bad experience. Additionally, Yelp is traditionally popular with reviewing restaurants and small businesses instead of contractors and warranty/insurance companies, so Yelp isn’t as well-rounded as sites like Trustpilot and BBB for this industry. These complaints are common to the industry, showing that even for a company with 90% positive reviews, there are still some issues to watch out for.

In most cases, Liberty Home Guard pays claims in a timely manner and sends technicians within a reasonable window of time. There are occasional customer complaints where an item isn’t covered or a technician isn’t dispatched within a reasonable time. Still, these are the exception rather than the rule. Simply put, no other company I’ve researched has a more reliable claims process than Liberty Home Guard.

Liberty Home Guard scored better than American Home Shield in every category except customer experience, but there’s more to dig into. What I liked most about American Home Shield was its affordable coverage, which starts at just $20.99, and its high coverage limits for appliances and home systems. While Liberty Home Guard and American Home Shield are neck and neck when it comes to comprehensive price, American Home Shield offers more affordable starting plans. Also, American Home Shield has a $5,000 HVAC coverage limit and a $4,000 appliance coverage limit on its ShieldPlatinum plan, which is $2,000 to $3,000 more than Liberty.
However, Liberty has better customer reviews than American Home Shield, making it the more trustworthy choice. I would still recommend Liberty Home Guard to homeowners who want comprehensive coverage because Liberty’s reputation and customer review scores are second to none. Still, for homeowners who want a budget-friendly plan for limited coverage, I would recommend American Home Shield as one of the cheapest home warranty companies. Additionally, I would recommend American Home Shield to homeowners who have appliances that cost more than $2,000 because its coverage limits are much higher than Liberty’s.

Liberty Home Guard scored better than or equal to Choice Home Warranty in every category of our research, but that doesn’t mean there’s no reason to reconsider your provider choice. While Liberty excels in its plan selection and available add-ons, Choice Home Warranty excels in customer service. CHW has a four-hour guarantee stating that after you submit a service request, they’ll reach out to available service providers within just four hours. Most competitors try to reach out to a service technician within 24 to 48 hours, and they don’t have an outright guarantee, so Choice Home Warranty is much quicker.
However, Choice Home Warranty is currently subject to a class-action lawsuit filed by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office in 2019. It also has more complaints on review sites, mainly saying the company denies some claims in bad faith. Although the pricing for both companies is comparable, I would still recommend Liberty Home Guard because of its reliability and reputation. Choice Home Warranty simply can’t match the trustworthiness of Liberty Home Guard, and seeing firsthand how Liberty treats its potential customers, I have much more confidence in the company.

Select Home Warranty scores higher than Liberty Home Guard in affordability and customer experience but by very small margins. While Select is more affordable than Liberty, its plans are only around $5 to $10 less a month. Plus, a low monthly rate isn’t everything. Liberty offers more add-ons than Select, and its appliance coverage limits are $1,500 higher.
However, Liberty scores higher than Select in every other category. I read through Select’s entire sample contract, so I know that Select Home Warranty has low appliance coverage limits and strict terms and conditions for claims, which is reflected in its low claims process score. I recommend Liberty Home Guard to customers because the customer satisfaction it offers is worth the extra $5 to $10 a month.

Liberty Home Guard’s BBB Rating
In 2024, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) downgraded Liberty Home Guard’s A rating to NR (not rated). In addition, BBB tagged the company’s BBB page with a Pattern of Complaint alert. The alert says BBB noticed increased consumer complaints since 2023 “regarding the claims process, customer service, and sales tactics.”
The Pattern of Complaint alert also mentions that LHG was contacted on March 11, 2024, to seek cooperation in resolving the issues.
Liberty Home Guard responded on March 12, 2024, by letting BBB know “that new software upgrades are currently being deployed, which are intended to facilitate the communication regarding the scheduling of technician appointments and streamlining the claims process. In addition, the company reports that it is increasing its customer service headcount and augmenting the training sessions and oversight for its sales representatives.”
Liberty Home Guard co-founders and co-CEOs Ben Joseph and David Moreno also issued a joint statement regarding the BBB alert and LHG’s commitment to its customers:
“Despite the BBB’s alert, our customer satisfaction levels remain by far the highest relative to our scale. Last month, we had the lowest percentage of customer cancellation requests in our entire history. On the BBB’s own platform, Liberty Home Guard has achieved a star rating of 4.5 out of 5 from nearly 2,500 reviews. For added context, the approximately 480 resolved complaints on Liberty Home Guard’s BBB profile equate to an extremely low fraction of a percentage relative to the size and scale of our total customer base.”

How to File a Claim
Liberty Home Guard provides two claim-filing methods: a 24/7 claims phone number and an online portal. In its sample contract, LHG bolds the following statement: “LHG must be notified as soon as the malfunction is discovered and prior to the expiration of the Agreement Term and any bonus months.” Delaying notifying the company of an appliance or system breakdown could lead to claim denial.
After approving your claim, LHG will send an in-network service provider to your home within 48 business hours. However, the company’s sample contract states that these ranges are for claims submitted during normal business hours. If you submit a claim after hours, on the weekend, or during a holiday, expect a delay in your claim’s processing.

Liberty Home Guard offers plans that, in most cases, last 12 months. For an annual premium, you can purchase a multiyear policy. When you purchase coverage, LHG won’t accept claims until the initial waiting period ends. This period lasts for 30 days after you sign up.
Like most home warranty companies, Liberty Home Guard provides a free cancellation period. It will refund your entire policy premium if you cancel within the first 30 days of purchase.
If you cancel after 30 days, Liberty Home Guard will refund a prorated amount based on the amount of time you held your policy. In addition, LHG charges a $50 cancellation fee.

If you have a dispute with LHG regarding your most recent claim, you can take several actions to expedite the resolution process:
- Confirm your coverage details: Angel Conlin, chief insurance and compliance officer at Kin Insurance, recommends the following: “After a claim has been denied, your first step should be to review your home warranty coverage to verify that the reasons cited for the denial comply with your warranty provider’s coverage terms.”
- Contact Liberty Home Guard: Once you’ve reviewed your service contract and confirmed your malfunction is covered, contact LHG. We suggest you try contacting them at least three times before escalating the matter.
- Document everything: Each time you contact claims or customer service, get the name of the person you spoke to and the date and time of your interaction. If you contact LHG via email, save the email chain. These documents prove you attempted to resolve the issue if you need to escalate it to a higher authority.
- Contact a consumer protection agency: If LHG still refuses to cooperate after your third attempt at resolution, you should contact your state’s consumer protection agency. Your state’s attorney general’s office or insurance commissioner has a complaint form on its website.
