TotalProtect Home Warranty, now part of Cinch Home Services, offers straightforward coverage with nationwide availability, 24/7 service, and a generous 180-day workmanship guarantee.

Read the review below for information on the former company, or explore our Cinch Home Services review to learn about its new services.

Its Combo Plan covers more systems and appliances than most competitors and starts at $58.95 per month (plus a $100 service fee per claim). That means you’ll typically spend around $800–$900 per year, depending on add-ons — a fair value for homeowners who want predictable repair costs.

So, is it worth it? If you’re dealing with aging appliances or HVAC systems, a plan like this can help you avoid surprise bills. For example, a typical central AC repair could run $300–$1,200 out of pocket, while full replacements can exceed $5,000. TotalProtect’s coverage caps (up to $3,000 per appliance) and zero aggregate limits across claims make it a strong pick for households with multiple older systems.

That said, customer satisfaction is mixed. While some praise the quick scheduling and clear online claims process, others report contractor no-shows and long hold times.

In this review, we’ll break down TotalProtect’s coverage, pricing, and how it stacks up to competitors. You’ll also get real-world pros, cons, and tips to help you decide if this home warranty is the right fit.

TotalProtect Home Warranty Plans, Coverage, and Cost

TotalProtect, now operating under Cinch Home Services, offers three straightforward plans: Appliances, Systems, and a Combo Plan that bundles both. Each plan includes optional add-ons and comes with a standard $100 service fee per claim, though you can choose a lower service fee in exchange for a higher monthly rate.

Here’s how pricing breaks down:

PlanMonthly CostEstimated Annual CostWhat’s Covered
Appliances Plan$34.95~$520/year9 major appliances, including fridge, washer/dryer, oven, microwave, and dishwasher
Systems Plan$44.95~$660/year17 home systems, including HVAC (2 units), plumbing, electrical, water heater, sump pump, and more
Combo Plan$58.95~$830/yearFull coverage for both appliances and systems listed above

Optional add-ons are available for $5–$20 per month, depending on the item. Popular options include:

  • Pools and spas
  • Well pumps and water softeners
  • Septic systems
  • Standalone freezers
  • Exterior plumbing lines

If you pay annually, you may get one month free or a rebate of up to $100.

Add-On Upgrade: Premier Upgrade Package

This optional upgrade offers extra coverage for expenses most plans exclude — like permits, code upgrades, equipment disposal, and ductwork modifications. You’ll get up to $500–$1,000 per claim for these “behind-the-scenes” costs that can really add up during major repairs.

Details for Top TotalProtect Systems and Appliances

At Today’s Homeowner, we’re dedicated to providing the information readers want the most. With that in mind, our team surveyed 1,000 homeowners in the U.S. and asked them which systems and appliances were most valuable to them.

The data shows that the most important systems and appliances for homeowners are: electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, refrigerators, washer/dryer combos, and the oven/stove/range.

Here’s what coverage for those systems and appliances looks like with a TotalProtect home warranty:

Refrigerator

Refrigerators are covered under the Appliances Plan and the Combo Plan up to $3,000 per term. Covered under that are: electronic components, the compressor, condenser, evaporator, hinges, motors, power cords, internal wiring, ice maker and ice and water dispensers that are built into the refrigerator. Things not covered: water supply lines, doors, door seals, drawers, shelves, knobs, handles, light bulbs, and stand-alone freezers.

Oven/stove/range

Like refrigerators, stoves, ranges, and wall ovens are covered up to $3,000 per term. That includes clock timer, heating elements/burners, switches, relays, touchpads, power cords, electronic components, internal wiring, gas valves, and ignitor and pilot assemblies. Not covered are doors, handles, latches, and door glass. These appliances are covered under the Appliances and Combo Plan.

Clothes washer and dryer

Components covered for washers are: automatic soap and rinse dispensers, washing machine tubs and agitators, latch assemblies, belts, compressor, condensers, control timers, hinges, internal wiring, power cords, motors, water valves, and pumps. Not covered are: doors, handles, knobs, and damage to clothing. Washers are covered up to $3,000.

For dryers, heating elements, drums, drum rollers, power cords, hinges, gas valves, motors, and electronic components are covered up to $3,000 per term. Filters and screens, doors, handles, knobs, damage to clothing, venting, and rollers other than clothes dryer drum rollers are not covered.

Electrical

Covered under electrical are standard mechanical parts or components located within the perimeter of the outer load-bearing walls. This can include ceiling fan motors and controls (but does not include transmitters and remotes), attic or whole house exhaust fans, door bells and chimes, interior standard light switches, smoke detectors, main breaker or fuse panel/box, and general line voltage wiring.

Not covered under a plan are bathroom exhaust fans, DC wiring and systems, exterior wiring and components, wiring of components in a detached structure, fire or carbon monoxide alarm/detection systems, batteries, intercom or speaker systems, failures caused by inadequate wiring capacity, circuit overload, power surge, corrosion caused by moisture, and more.

Plumbing

The following items are covered under plumbing: mechanical parts and components of garbage disposals, interior hose bibs, point of service water system/instahot, pressure regulating devices, shower and tub valves, toilet tanks, bowls, and toilet mechanisms within the toilet tank. Clearing plumbing stoppages is covered as well with some restrictions. The company’s sample contract has more specifics. Not covered under plumbing is work under the ground, in the foundation or slab, and any plumbing outside the perimeter of the foundation. Check the sample contract for additional plumbing exclusions.

Air conditioning

TotalProtect is specific in what they cover and what they do not cover in their sample contract when it comes to air conditioning. The air conditioner must be a maximum of five tons, residential, and centrally ducted. Covered under that is accessible ductwork, the air handler, blower fan motors, capacitors, compressors, condensers and condenser fan motors, fan blades, internal wiring, refrigerant, and more.

Not covered are things like condensate pumps and lines, any ductwork or piping that has asbestos, ductwork insulation, and more. Their service contract goes into detail.

Coverage Terms and Limits

TotalProtect contracts run for one year, with automatic renewal unless you cancel. There’s a 30-day waiting period before coverage kicks in, so you can’t use the plan for pre-existing issues.

If you’re buying a new home, some real estate plans may start coverage right at closing — make sure to clarify this with your rep.

Coverage Caps

Most covered items have per-item limits, but no total cap across the year — that’s a big plus if you have multiple breakdowns in the same year.

  • Appliances: Capped at $3,000 per item per year (includes washer, dryer, fridge, oven, etc.)
  • HVAC Systems: Usually capped at $1,500 per unit
  • Add-ons (like pools or septic): Limits vary — check your sample contract for exact amounts

Important: There’s no “aggregate cap,” which means you’re not stuck with a fixed max payout across all claims. That’s rare in this industry and could be worth hundreds — or even thousands — if you have multiple major failures in a year.

Where Is TotalProtect Available?

TotalProtect offers nationwide service, a definite plus for this company, as not all home warranty providers have coverage in all states.

What Others Are Saying About TotalProtect

Customer feedback on TotalProtect (now Cinch Home Services) is mixed — some homeowners have smooth claims and responsive service, while others describe delays, communication breakdowns, and no-show contractors. Like most home warranty companies, your experience often depends on your location and the third-party contractor assigned to your claim.

We’ve gathered reviews from major platforms to help you get a clearer picture. Here’s how TotalProtect stacks up against the industry average:

ReviewerTotalProtect RatingIndustry Average
Yelp1.0 / 5 (288 reviews)1.2 / 5 (375 reviews)
BBB2.5 / 5 (344 reviews)2.0 / 5 (956 reviews)
Trustpilot3.0 / 5 (1 review)1.9 / 5 (937 reviews)

Most negative reviews cite missed appointments, contractor issues, and poor follow-through. However, there are also several homeowners who had quick repairs and positive outcomes.

“I was pleasantly surprised at the efficiency and attention given for the warranted repair of my refrigerator. Parts had to be ordered and I daily received text messages.”
— Barbara M, 5 stars

Not all customers are as satisfied. Many point to unreliable contractors and poor communication as recurring issues.

“They rescheduled it seven times… didn’t call to reschedule, I found out the hard way when no one showed up.”
— Jennifer D, 03/14/2025

“I’ve spent hours on the phone… missed three days of work and still have no heat… This is simply negligent.”
— Mary M, 12/05/2024

That said, there are long-time customers who’ve had a consistently good experience and see value in the coverage.

“It’s pretty expensive when stuff breaks, so I’d rather get a warranty and pay $125 than $4,000. And TotalProtect seemed to cover more stuff compared to other places. I usually go online to submit a claim with them and their website is pretty simple to navigate. Then, the contractor called me that afternoon and he came the next day. It was great dealing with him. Having this warranty is very valuable for me and I’ll tell my friends to check TotalProtect out.”
— Travas, Augusta, GA

“We first heard about TotalProtect Home Warranty through a friend and we’ve been with the company for over 10 years now. Most recently, our water heater ruptured and needed it replaced. My wife took care of that claim and it went very smoothly for her. We got emails keeping us updated and the two technicians that installed the new heater were very nice. I would recommend TotalProtect, no question.”
— Lyndon, Greensboro, NC

As with any home warranty, the key is to go in with realistic expectations. Know what’s covered, read the fine print, and be proactive if communication breaks down.

Final Thoughts

TotalProtect is a good fit if:

  • You want nationwide coverage and 24/7 claims access.
  • You’re looking for a lower monthly cost and don’t mind a higher service fee.
  • You want broad coverage for both systems and appliances — not just the basics.

It may not be right for you if:

  • You prefer top-tier customer service with faster response times.
  • You’d rather pay a higher premium to avoid out-of-pocket service fees.

Overall, we give TotalProtect a 4.25 out of 5. It’s a dependable plan with excellent coverage value — just be ready to stay proactive during the claims process.

Frequently Asked Questions About TotalProtect Home Warranty

What does TotalProtect cover?

TotalProtect covers repair or replacement costs for many major home systems and appliances that fail due to normal wear and tear. You can choose between an Appliances Plan, Systems Plan, or a Combo Plan that includes both.

Covered items include HVAC components, plumbing, electrical systems, kitchen appliances, washers and dryers, and more. Most appliances are covered up to $3,000 per item per contract year, and major systems like HVAC have caps around $1,500.

Optional add-ons are available for pools, spas, septic systems, and even exterior plumbing lines. If you want comprehensive protection, the Combo Plan is your best bet — just be sure to review their sample contract to understand what’s included and what’s not.

Does TotalProtect cover older systems and appliances?

Yes — older systems and appliances are eligible for coverage, as long as they’re in working order when your policy starts. You won’t need a home inspection, but pre-existing issues or anything visibly broken before the coverage begins won’t be covered.

That’s important if you’re buying a home with older equipment. Make sure everything’s working before your warranty kicks in, and consider scheduling a tune-up or walkthrough with a contractor to avoid surprises.

Is a home inspection required to purchase a home warranty from TotalProtect?

No, you don’t need a home inspection to get started. However, TotalProtect does expect all covered items to be fully functional when coverage begins. On older homes, they may request an inspection or photos before approving certain claims.

If your home is 20+ years old or you’re not sure about the condition of your systems, it’s a good idea to document their working condition for your own protection.

How do I submit a claim to TotalProtect?

You can submit a claim 24/7 by calling 800-474-4047 or going online to my.totalprotect.com. After filing, you’ll be matched with a local contractor who will contact you to schedule the service.

You’ll pay a service fee, typically $100, each time a technician visits. If the repair fails within 180 days, they’ll come back at no additional charge — that’s one of the stronger guarantees in the industry. Still, be sure to follow up if a contractor misses an appointment or if communication drops off.
